NYC ADA requirement: 10% accessible bike spaces
NYC Building Code §1109.9.3.1 – Accessible Cycle Storage says that when bicycle storage is provided:
10% of the total number of cycle spaces, but not less than one, must be accessible cycle storage.
Each accessible cycle space must be at least:
86″ long × 42″ wide (7′-2″ × 3′-6″)
NYC also requires:
An accessible route to the accessible cycle-storage area.
A compliant turning space.
A clear floor space on the long side of the accessible cycle space.
How many ADA/accessibility spaces?
Because the requirement is 10%, I would calculate it by rounding up to the next whole space:
Total Bike Spaces
Accessible Spaces
1–10
1
11–20
2
21–30
3
31–40
4
41–50
5
51–60
6
61–70
7
71–80
8
81–90
9
91–100
10
So, for example:
48 total bikes → 5 accessible spaces 53 total bikes → 6 accessible spaces 100 total bikes → 10 accessible spaces
The accessible positions should be clearly shown as 86″ × 42″ minimum, floor-level and adjacent to the required clear floor/loading area.
One important detail: 42″ is the accessible cycle-storage space itself; it isn’t necessarily the entire footprint you should allocate on your shop drawing. You also need the long-side clear floor/loading area and turning space required by §§1109.9.3.3–1109.9.3.4.
For the NYC bike-rooms and Canopy’s , 86″ × 42″ and 10% minimum are the numbers I’d put directly on the layout/code note. Bike Room Solutions of NYC takes the guessing on ADA compliance, Bike Canopy or Cage code compliant layouts and Indoor Code compliant layouts. Out NYC office provides complimentary code compliant layouts and quotes, Six days a week.
